Program Service
The Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Upward Bound Program offers its services to students year-round. The program is broken up into two major components plus special events:
Academic Year: A twenty-week Saturday instructional/tutorial program.
Summer Session: A Six-week summer residential program.
Both the academic and summer components are designed to assist participants in successfully matriculating to postsecondary education. Curriculum emphasis is placed on reading, mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition & literature, computer application and foreign language. Centered in the areas of study skills development, career planning, health education, physical education and multiculturalism will be supplemental instruction and workshops. Instruction and tutorials will also focus on PSAT, SAT, and ACT test preparation, skills which are necessary for college admission. Additionally, career exploration, work experience, and mentoring will be an integral component to assist participants in deciding on potential college majors and career options.
Academic Year

After-School Tutorial Sessions
- Student success is our priority! Upward Bound requires all students with GPAs lower than 2.5 to attend mandatory tutoring during the week, in addition to Saturday Academy tutoring.
- In our efforts to improve tutoring accessibility, Upward Bound has expanded tutoring services to offer web-based tutoring options for all participants. Students who are unable to attend afterschool tutoring should sign up with their assigned coach for web-based tutoring through iTutor.

Saturday Academy
- Saturday Academy provides participants with instruction in core curriculum courses (Mathematics, English, Laboratory Science, Rocket Science, and Computer Science) and offers tutoring services in any subject in which they may need assistance. Various workshops are also provided during Saturday Academy throughout the academic year.
- Upward Bound will host and provide transportation for Saturday Academy on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month (excluding holidays and summer) at California State University of Long
Beach

Academic and College Enrichement Planning
Upward Bound offers various college tours and enrichment activities throughout the academic year that have as their purpose the intellectual, social, and cultural development of participants. Some examples of prior and future field trips and educational activities are:
- College Fairs/ Expo
- Campus Tours (UC, CSU, Private, Community, and Regional)
- Cultural Events
- Educational Day at Amusement Parks
- Museums
- Service Projects
- Sporting Events

Summer Session

Upward Bound offers a six-week summer program with two different levels running concurrently. Our summer program is designed to provide a holistic experience that supports students’ academic, social, and personal growth. The academic curriculum will help prepare college-bound students for success in core subjects such as mathematics and English. In addition to academic preparation, students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of engaging courses, including:
- Spanish Language
- Family and Consumer Science
- Engineering and Architecture
- Communications & Etiquette
- Golf Fundamentals
- Life Skills
Beyond the classroom, the program includes educational field trips, interactive workshops, and cultural enrichment activities, all designed to build a strong foundation for lifelong success.
